For Ryanair, CDP offers an integrated approach that goes beyond existing EU regulatory reporting requirements by placing environmental performance within a broader strategic context. While the aviation sector already reports extensively on fuel consumption, SAF and emissions through frameworks such as the EU ETS, ReFuelEU Aviation and CSRD, these disclosures are often fragmented and largely compliance‑driven. CDP brings this information together into a single, coherent view, enabling a more holistic assessment of environmental risks and opportunities and strengthening long‑term decision making by directly linking environmental data to business strategy.
This integrated perspective is particularly important given the specific characteristics of the aviation sector. Aviation relies almost entirely on high energy‑density liquid fuels, faces limited technological alternatives in the short to medium term, and operates within a highly regulated and inherently global environment. |

As a result, it cannot be assessed in the same way as sectors that can electrify processes or shift energy sources more rapidly. Recognising these sector‑specific realities is essential for a balanced, credible and meaningful assessment of aviation’s environmental and energy performance.
CDP is increasingly reflecting these differences by incorporating more tailored, sector‑based considerations into its questionnaires. For Ryanair, which achieved an A score in the most recent CDP cycle, this evolution is more than necessary and allows management to use energy‑related data as a strategic tool to assess operational resilience and anticipate future challenges in a constrained operating environment.
